Colombia: risk factors for investors

As Colombia’s armed forces comb the jungle for the last of 23 oil workers taken hostage by leftist guerrillas, investors are wondering anew about risk factors in what has been one of Latin America’s brightest growth stories.

Significant security gains have been at the heart of Colombia’s successes since 2002, when a paisa called Álvaro Uribe became president and began an uncompromising military campaign to secure the country’s roads and urban centres.

There army’s quick response to Monday’s kidnapping is notable in a country that only a decade ago could claim to be in control of only a third of its territory.

Twenty-one of the 23 workers were freed less than 24 hours after they were taken, thanks in part to information provided by one hostage who managed to escape under his own steam. (continue reading… )
